Choosing a Dubai school and a home nearby

Start with your child and the curriculum

Note your child's age, completed year, teaching language and planned moving date. Share these details with admissions: matching Year and Grade numbers do not always mean the same stage. For a teenager, include existing exam subjects and plans for further study.

Do not choose a curriculum based only on a school's name. NLCS Dubai offers IB, Hartland International follows a British pathway, and Wellington International moves from the British curriculum to IB in the final years. Start with two suitable pathways and ask how your child can continue without losing essential subjects.

The KHDA directory lets you compare schools by curriculum, location and inspection results. Check the report date and relevant sections, including student support, teaching and wellbeing. An overall rating cannot answer every family's questions.

Confirm a school place before choosing a permanent home

Ask whether a place is available in the right year on your moving date, whether assessment is required, and whether it can take place before arrival. Distinguish a confirmed offer from a waiting list. Booking a tour or submitting an application does not confirm enrolment.

Ask the school for a written list of documents and steps for your circumstances: the previous country, curriculum and age affect a transfer. KHDA's guide says Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curricula run from April to March, while the others in the guide run from September to June. Check the chosen school's calendar against your moving date.

Discuss English and settling in: who supports a new pupil, how progress is assessed, which support is included and what costs extra.

Budget for the full year and the correct year group

Request the School Fees Fact Sheet and an offer for your child. A school's fee range covers different year groups: an early-years fee is not a secondary-school budget. All figures you compare should refer to the same academic year and applicable terms.

• Tuition: academic year, year group, base fee and applicable discount.
• Admissions: application and assessment fees and registration advance; check what is credited towards tuition.
• Everyday costs: bus, meals, uniform and materials.
• Additional costs: exams, trips, paid activities and individual support.
• Timing: payment dates and what happens if you withdraw or postpone your move.

Calculate the first and following year separately. NLCS publishes introductory discounts for new students, while Hartland has separate terms for families enrolled earlier. Those benefits do not apply automatically to every new application. Wellington's checked page lists the previous academic year, so request the current fee.

Check an ordinary school morning

Plan the journey from a specific building to the correct school gates. Compare the morning trip and the return after lessons; allow for access, parking, waiting and after-school activities. A short straight-line distance does not confirm a convenient route.

For a school bus, confirm the stop, pickup time, journey length and return service after clubs. If you have two children, check both campuses and timetables. DBS Jumeirah Park's Foundation provision is on a separate campus, which matters for daily planning.

Some Atlas markers identify a campus; others are labelled as neighbourhoods. An area marker helps you explore the location, but does not replace an exact address or a route check.

Build a shortlist of school, neighbourhood and home

Choose up to three schools in the directory and compare curricula, stages and fees. Open each school's area, then switch the map to property: the area is retained. For every suitable home, check its availability date, actual commute and everyday costs.

If the school suits your child but a place is not confirmed, keep a second option with a workable commute. When discussing a home with a specialist, name the school, year group and start time: that is more useful than simply asking to live near a school.

What to prepare for the first conversation

A short list is enough: your child's age and year group, current curriculum, moving date, preferred language, learning needs and annual budget limit. Add the work address and commute preferences. These details help narrow down both schools and homes.
